What is a Dry Riser?

Dry risers are often found in high-rise buildings and consist of a series of pipework and valves arranged so that fire-fighting water can be delivered safely to all floors.

A dry riser system provides easy access to fire-engines and considerably reduces the time it takes for water to reach the site. This is because it removes the necessity for firefighters to drag their charged fire hoses all the way through the building and to the upper floors. Every moment counts when a fire breaks out and a dry riser system is a fast and efficient way of getting water to all floors and is critical to the life-saving process.

How do Dry Risers work?

Once firefighters have arrived on the scene, they will then attach their hose and fill the pipe to the dry riser with pressurized water. This is done using an inlet placed on the ground floor of the building. This water is then pushed through the system, supplying the building with life-saving water which is dispersed via outlet valves.

When are Dry Risers necessary?

When a building is higher than 18 meters above access level to the top floor, dry risers then become a necessary part of the building’s design. Dry risers are an important part of building regulations jurisdiction as they are integral to the life-saving process when a fire breaks out.
